What's attractive about Sony's latest consumer product is that it eases recording of both the HDV and DV formats onto standard MiniDV videotape besides changing from HDV to DV. In addition to featuring this dual-format recording ability, the HDR-FX1E gives the power to consumers to output recorded videos either as HDV or DV in either 16:9 widescreen or 4:3 ratios.

High Definition (HD) is determined to turn out to be the Japanese user's number one selection in digital video in 5 years. It will be essential to make it comfortable and cost-effective for masses to start shooting HD. The FX1E is especially appealing in that it has the ability to mix HD and SD recordings onto MiniDV cassettes. HDV has two resolutions, one is a 720 horizontal line progressive scan having 1,280 vertical pixels and the second one is 1,080-line interlaced scan image sequence containing 1,440 vertical pixels. As described by Sony, the employment of 1,080 horizontal interlaced lines intends this camcorder is simpatico with the highest resolution HD (High Definition) digital Television screens. So as to carry such a high density of information onto a DV tape, a variation of MPEG2 compression is employed to the point that is equal to 4 times over that practiced for DV (which itself is 5:1).
