Sony DCR-HC96 Camcorder Review

The DCR-HC96 is Sony's chief one consumer MiniDV camcorder of this year, and by the appearances of it, Sony features all but lost new inventions in this medium. The HC96 is the like camcorder as previous HC90 (USD629), with the majority of ports resettled from the physical structure to a Handy cam place.

Video Performance

At 3000 lux, the DCR-HC96 (USD516) possessed very good quality video performance. The HC96 carries a large 1/3inch charge-coupled device with 3.31 gross mega pixel (2.05 effective mega pixels). This is one of the major differences among makers in their super-grade models. Panasonic and JVC go on the 3 Charge-coupled device way, whereas Sony and Canon employ bigger single chips. At 3000 lux, the differences among these selections can change, and the processing methods in very much too. Larger chips functions enough good in low light conditions, and the HC96 was remarkable.

We observe that the image has superb color balance and a less noise, the thing that Panasonics have been demonstrating a discrete increase in. moreover, the HC96 succeeded to avoid the faded appearance of the low-class HC26 (USD300). The grey scale was also distinctly characterized, while the blacks might have been slightly darker without reaching the lowest level.

Examined with the last year’s product HC90 (USD629), the HC96 displays more sharpness, guessed the tonal range is not as much of the same. The high quality Canon Optura 600 (USD1099) possessed the same tonal range, besides, though the Canon’s image was brighter to some extent. Canon demonstrated a leaning towards green/yellow more than blue relatively.

The JVC GR-X5 (USD958), a best-loved camcorder from last year’s products, possessed a top saturation, mainly in the reds, and enough in whites. You may comment that the HC96 featured truer colors, while many inexperienced persons favor a more saturated picture. The Sony DVD403 (USD489) is confirmation of that.

Low Light Performance

The functioning of the HC96 at 60 lux is outstandingly fine. This is a great illustration of a big chip size blessing you with the benefit in low light conditions. At 60 lux, the image is almost as brilliant and solid to the level at 3000 lux. Even the whites sustained very well. The obvious degradation is observed in the category of noise. Noise rises, and it is not the best grain noise moreover. Luckily, it is not the same bluish noise that was infecting last year’s Sony camcorders.
