Panasonic's VDR-D100
camcorder offers a debut point into DVD shooting and playback exclusive
of the added extras of models superior in the series. Will it be

The VDR-D100 goes with the
VDR-D150 DVD camcorder, as being inclined straight at the home video

First impressions

Features
The VDR-D100 features an
800,000 pixels 1/6th single Charge-coupled device to create video
pictures having an effective 400,000-pixel resolution. It has the
capability of recording to a broad range of 8cm DVD media - for example
DVD-RAM, DVD-RW; DVD-Video (DVD-RW, DVD-R) formats. It has the ability
to function to a minimum of 12 lux (2 lux in Night View mode) while its
optimal light is 1,400 lux. A remarkable 30x Optical Zoom lens offers a
focal distance from 1.9mm to 57mm. Panasonic has also offered a two-step
Digital Zoom at 50x and 1000x. A stereo Zoom Mike is accessible in the
menu if needed

Menu choices and
functional settings are performed with the help of a very small Joystick
that is located in the centre of the Power Mode Dial. To navigate in the
well planned and ordered menu system demands up, down, left and right
actions on the joystick with a centre push to affirm a choice made. The
graphical type of the menu structure is in a way that it gives clear
direction and position signs at all levels. The entire Auto / Manual
controls are operated here. Focus, Exposure, White Balance and other AE
modes, in plus to Soft Skin mode, Fade OUT / IN and Backlight
Compensation. The VDR-D100 also gives an adjustable electronic shutter
speed control which ranges from the 1/50th second to 1/8000th second.
Exposure control (controlled manually) gives a range of between f2.0 at
its broadest to f16 at its narrowest. This model can perform Widescreen
Television recording, while it must be noticed that this result is
attained only by Cutting short the top and bottom of the picture and
recording it intrinsically on DVD. It is truly a 4:3 picture having
black bars with the top and bottom of the scene.
